Creative Team Event in Berlin: A Tufting Workshop for Teams
A good team event in Berlin does not have to mean that everyone does the same thing or leaves with the same result. Sometimes a shared experience becomes more interesting when each person develops an idea of their own while working alongside the rest of the team.
This is the idea behind our tufting workshops for teams. At our artist-run studio in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, each participant creates an individual textile piece using wool, colour and a tufting machine. At the same time, the whole group spends a few hours making, experimenting and learning a new technique together.
The format works well for company teams, creative offsites and groups looking for an alternative to more conventional team-building activities in Berlin.
What makes a creative team event different?
Many team activities focus on completing one task as a group. Tufting adds another layer: every participant makes their own creative decisions.
Which motif should I make? Which colours work together? How can a drawing be translated into wool? Should the result be graphic, minimal, playful or abstract?
This means the workshop does not produce a set of identical objects. At the end of the session, completely different pieces can stand next to each other even though everyone has worked with the same technique, in the same space and at the same time.
For us, this balance between individual making and a shared experience is one of the most interesting aspects of a creative team event.
From screens to materials
Many working days are shaped by meetings, messages and hours spent in front of screens. Tufting is a very different process.
The machine is guided by hand. You feel its movement, work directly with yarn and fabric, and gradually see a drawing develop into a textile surface.
No previous textile or craft experience is required. We begin by introducing the tufting machine and basic technique, followed by time to practise. Only then does everyone start working on their individual design.
Team building without a forced group result
Our workshop is not designed around making a team solve a task as efficiently as possible. Instead, interaction develops naturally while everyone is working.
People look at what is happening on the frame next to them, compare colours, discuss an idea, help each other with a shape or simply take a break and talk. Some participants work quietly and with intense concentration; others exchange ideas throughout the process.
This makes tufting particularly interesting for teams looking for a creative team-building workshop in Berlin where collaboration does not need to be constantly organised or performed.
What do you make during the workshop?
Each participant creates their own small textile piece. Different formats are available depending on how much time your team has and the size of the piece you would like to make.
For longer formats, participants can prepare an individual motif in advance. Suitable designs can be transferred onto the tufting fabric before the workshop, leaving more time to work with the machine during the session.
You do not need to be able to draw. In fact, successful tufting designs often work particularly well with clear shapes, larger areas and a certain degree of visual reduction.

A workshop inside an artist-run studio
Tufting Berlin / CL Studio is run by artists Sungeun Claire Choi and Wonek Lee.
Both of us studied photography and media installation at HFBK Hamburg and use tufting within our own artistic practice. Because of this, we approach the workshop not only as a recreational activity, but also as an introduction to a material, a technique and a way of translating an image into a physical surface.
Our space in Prenzlauer Berg is both a workshop space and a working artist studio. Textile works, yarn, tools, art, design and ongoing projects are part of the environment in which the workshops take place.
For a creative corporate event in Berlin, this creates a different setting from a conventional event venue: the team spends a few hours in a space where things are actually being designed and made.

Team event at our studio or at your company?
Smaller groups can work together at our studio in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. We can currently host teams of up to 13 people at the same time.
For larger teams and company events, we can also bring the workshop to your office or another event location. The format can be adapted according to the number of participants, available space and time.
An on-site format can be particularly useful for larger company events, Christmas parties, conferences and creative offsites.
