Choose clear, simple shapes.

Your motif is freely selectable, but please avoid very fine details, tiny elements and complicated structures.

Curves and rounded shapes are possible. The important thing is that the individual areas are large enough to be clearly tufted and separated from one another.

A good rule: larger areas are much easier to tuft cleanly than many small ones.

Simplify photographs and paintings.

Real photographs and detailed paintings usually cannot be translated directly into tufting.

If you want to work from a photograph, portrait, animal or painting, simplify it into an illustration, cartoon-style image or graphic composition with clear colour areas.

Think of your design as a few clearly defined shapes and colours rather than an image made from many small details.

Send the image straight from the front.

If you are using an existing rug, artwork, drawing or object as your reference, please send us an image taken directly from the front.

Images photographed from an angle create perspective distortion and make it difficult for us to transfer the correct shape onto the fabric.

Give thin or protruding shapes an outline.

Very thin elements or shapes that stick out from the main body of the design can be difficult to finish cleanly.

In these cases, we recommend adding an outline or a surrounding shape. This gives the motif more stability and creates a cleaner finished edge.

Irregular and organic shapes are welcome — they simply need enough structure to be finished cleanly.
